Sustainability Speaker Series - September 7, 2019
The FREE Sustainability Speaker Series at the American Precision Museum concludes on Saturday, September 7 at 3:00 pm with a presentation on resource capture and recycling programs by Richard Backer, the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for the Northwest Vermont Solid Waste Management District. His presentation will include the historical origins of recycling scrap metal during WWII, the causes and consequences of the Cuyahoga River fire in 1969, and the inception of Earth Day. Backer will discuss how waste management districts respond to and better steward the waste and by-products of manufacturing and explain the concept of “extended producer liability,” which makes a product’s manufacturer responsible for its entire life-cycle, especially its take-back, recycling, and final disposal. His presentation also suggests actions consumers can take as part of the stewardship equation.
