2005: The Mechanization of Woodworking Print E-mail
The exhibit featured hand tools, woodworking machine tools, patent drawings, and engravings. ImageThe 19th-century mechanization of woodworking made possible new processes for shaping and joining wood that resulted in the mass production of building components for new homes and emerging industrial sites. Early machine designers brought an artistic, folksy, flair to their craft that was no longer evident in second generation woodworking machinery. The exhibit highlighted evidence that the 1846 Robbins & Lawrence Armory windows were made using both mechanical and hand tools, making a connection with the work underway to restore the museum's historic 166 wooden windows.
