6th annual Model Engineering Show Print E-mail

Last year, the Model Engineering Show was held Saturday, October 29th 2005 at the Windsor Community Center

The following photos highlight  just a few of the wonderful machines and models on display at the 2005 show!

Dean Merrill (on left) demonstrated this restored steam engine and custom made, wood burning boiler for the duration of the show.  Visitors were kept on their toes when he  pulled the whistle on the boiler.    APM Trustee, John Ordyk who helped set up the show is on the right.

Table View
Once inside, visitors were greeted by tables full of precision models, most of them running!

Bill McCarthy
Trustee and Model Engineering Show Co-Chairman Bill McCarthy  demonstrated precision machining on a foot pedal powered lathe. He was able to hold a .001 tolerance, and the lead screw did not have graduations!
Trustee Rick Roesch looks on.

Bill McCarthy also made this fully functional  2.5" bore by 4" stroke Marine Steam Engine that was on display.

Restored Steam Engine

Trustee Chairman Doug Loudon thanks Peter Renzetti  of Arden Forge Co., West Chester PA for the restoration of the  Box Bed, Long Stroke steam engine originally made in the 1860's. Peter fully restored the engine including making a new main bearing (visible on the shaft) within the museum's "adopt a machine program". It was running silently and smoothly during the show and will be on display in the museum next year.

This beautiful little John Deere, "make and break " engine was on display

Dual Steam Engine
Double Acting, two cylinder steam engine.

gas engines
Exhibitors Barney Drillen (left) and Joseph Higgins from Cape Elizabeth, Maine demonstrate their similar gasoline, make and break vertical engines. Note the custom fabricated radiators.

Joe also built the two cylinder gasoline engine with exposed push rods shown below.

Wood Models
Exhibitor Ernie Smith from Simsbury CT had on display a number of beautiful wood models including this replica of a friends open touring car. All the wood is its natural color and to replicate the dark red of the car he used bloodwood. The steering actually works and the wheels are also carved from  hardwoods with precision wire spokes which perfectly match the original. Other models include his working excavator shown below.

Tangye Steam Engine

Bill Huxhold of West Hill Ontario, Canada had on display -- in addition to many of his original steam engines and working machine tools -- a new, "work in process" Double Tangye Steam Engine with dual flyball governors. Many of Bill's other models are still shown in the web section for past shows linked below.

Model boat
Gerhard Spielmann, one of our regular exhibitors and Trustee Chairman Doug Loudon examine Gerhard's model steamboat that is radio controlled, has a working boiler, and custom made steam engine. The deck is made of precision laminated wood pieces. Can you imagine a grandson playing with this boat??  Check out the engine, planking and drive system below.
